For the Kids

Freedom. To chose. To live. To follow your heart. Everyone has this right. We are not all meant to follow the same path. While we are led to believe that we must own a home, drive a fancy car and enroll our kids in every sport known to man in order to be happy, this is simply not the case. This is not the path for everyone. Nor should we be forced to follow it.

We made this change in lifestyle for our kids, not in spite of them. They are our inspiration. They are our purpose. They are the ones who really matter. Our job is to raise happy, healthy, educated kids. There is no better education than first-hand experience. No better way to fully understand something than to witness it for yourself, experience it for yourself. No better way to fully appreciate our world than to travel it. Explore it. Live it.

Rob and I are downshifters. We have chosen not to keep up with the Joneses. Instead, we are choosing family. We are choosing to spend our time and lives exploring the country, and if luck has it, the world, with our children. We are choosing family values over everything else. We are focusing on what really matters to us: our children, our family. We firmly believe that everything we are doing will only benefit our kids. It is our hope that they will be well-rounded, well-educated, well-traveled members of society. This is our dream.

We want our kids to know that it is not what you have that matters, it is who you are. What is inside your heart. The person you are when nobody is looking. That is what really matters. That is what will truly make a difference.

    • Thank you. We truly believe so as well, it is just hard to hear negative comments and not feel the need to explain our purpose. Not everyone will understand, and I accept that. All we can do is our best, and hope that it is enough.

  1. WOW WOW WOW!!!! well said Mariah, I can really feel now that any doubts you might have had about changing your lifestyle, due to what other people said..have now been blown to the wind…..good for you my little band of pioneers. May God be with you always and speed you on your way ( and also guard against van breakdowns)

    • Thank you. I almost deleted this post, but it is something I have needed to do. Last week I realized just how important it was for me to share this. Hopefully now I can stop obesessing over it and move on. As always, thank you for your support.

      • Good for you! You can tell by the looks on your children’s faces that they are the most fortunate children in the world. Really, more people should listen to your message, they would be happier. Yeah for the Harper 5!!!!!!

  2. Everyone should be able to live their lives the way they see fit. You put it into words beautifully! Your voice is a very powerful thing. We are so proud of you for following your hearts and ignoring all the negativity. We will always be here for you and wish you the best on your journeys. We love you!!! 🙂

  3. What an incredible gift you are giving your kids and yourself! Too many people are on the treadmill, battling to keep up with the Jones and neglecting their families in the process. I am a huge fan and supporter of what you’re doing. Our family is also in the process of downsizing over in Australia so we can travel and spend precious time together as a family. I think it’s far more important than owning a fancy car and being mortgaged up to your eyeballs for a fancy house.

    • Unfortunately, the opposers seem to have the loudest voice when you are steping out of the box. I am wishing you all the best with your own upcoming adventure. It is a wonderful life. We have to work as we go so we are not traveling every day, but we are loving the freedom that comes with this lifestyle.

      • At least you are working to live… We will have to do the same, we’re currently working on how to finance our trip. First up we’re saving for a tow car! I look forward to reading more about your adventures. X

  4. Reblogged this on and commented:
Since making a conscious decision to get off the treadmill and buy a vintage Airstream to live in and travel as a family, I’m amazed at how many others are pursuing a similar path.

  5. Wow. I just read this and I have such a renewed sense of respect and admiration for you and your family! You guys are making it count where it matters most. Ultimately, family is not just an inward preoccupation centred on the material wellbeing and comforts of the members of its household. Family is ultimately building and raising a new generation of men and women rooted in values and principles of truth, integrity, compassion, selflessness. Not just takers but givers as well. And it seems, you guys have taken it beyond mere words and ideals and have chosen to live it. Once again, your mission statement in life and vision for your children is a real inspiration. I always felt you guys were special. Now I know for sure. Sharon

    • I am speechless. Thank you. My simple words will never be able to express how much this comment means to me, but simple is all I am. You have touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for your beautiful words.
