Sweet Slumber

“Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal underneath, for the instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong in me.”

~Anne Morrow Lindbergh

It is no secret that winter and I have never quite gotten along.  I just don’t understand it.  Is it really necessary for ice to build up on the inside of the windows?  Or for the sidewalks to get so slippery that you have to skate down them?  Or for your fingers to stick to the door knob simply because they were a tiny bit damp from being washed?  I sure don’t think so.

So I decided to price out airline tickets for a family of five to Hawaii.  Las Vegas.  Mexico.  Anywhere with temperatures above freezing.  Unfortunately, they were all a little bit (okay, a lot) out of our price range, so I had to come up with another plan.  We are limited this time of year, so I decided on the only other thing that makes sense.

Hibernation.  We can curl up into our warm and cozy beds in late fall, just before the temperatures get unbearably cold, then we will climb back out in early spring, just in time to watch the flowers bloom.  It sounds like such a grand plan that I feel a little silly for not thinking of it sooner.  I had thought that it might be a little too late to get started this year, but perhaps I was mistaken…

  1. I have enough fat stored up to be able to slumber the winter away, Mariah dearest does not…I guess that means you’ll need to make more cookies next fall!
